and the big majority of nra members in favor of at least starter reforms to our gun laws, the biggest barrier to reforming our laws now may just be the pervasive common wisdom that it's not even worth it to try. modern history defies that common wisdom. but it persists. it persists, maybe. now, the last time we talked on the show about the long, long and long lost modern history and bipart san gun reforms was in the wake of the tucson shooting this past weekend. and in the wake of that shooting, the tucson shooting, this was the general assessment. gun control dead. a nonstarter. shootings unlikely to change laws. don't expect any changes. that was our random survey of the headlines last january after the tucson shootings. at least if you asked the beltway shooting gods. now it seems like the common wisdom may be less certain. look at the headlines now. and it's more like this. debate on gun control is revived. lawmakers call for tougher gun laws in wake of new town massacre. gun control debate simmers after sandy hook massacre. nobody is saying it's going to be easy for our country to reform

pole ster to poll gun owners and nra members and you get 70 to 90% common sense issue that we could do to make our country safer. roughly 40% of the guns sold in america are sold in a secondary market private sales. there is no registration at all. you can get someone who can't get on a plane but they can buy weapons. overwhelmingly 84% of gun owners in america believe that should change. changing that alone makes a difference. one out of two women he that are murdered with a gun are murdered with someone that they know well. in states that don't allow people to trade in private gun shows, that number drops by 40%. those people who have domestic violence abuse -- >> you have had a lot of experience with guns in your career it seems to be a natural crisis. you have had six of the worst. there is an escalation that these situations aurora was the worst single killing with a gun. is there a national crisis and is the president trying to register the ownership of guns in a more sensible manner? >> i think the president recognized today in a very appropriate statement that we have to look a

militias. the n.r.a., and other groups further to the right have independerred fear in the average gun owner. in large parts of america, the gun is a way of life. the left wants to take the hunting rifle your uncle tommy gave you and you were 14. once we establish there is a constitutional right to bear arms, we should have the right to admit that no amendment is absolute. after all, the first amendment has limitations. you can't falsely scream "fire" in a crowded theater. we have limits on libel and pornography. well the kinds of things like the brady law, assault weapons ban, limitations to clips, making sure mentally unstable people don't get guns, do not interfere with the fundamental right, but at the same time make us safer. every amendment should have some balance and some limitation. and if together we can come to the middle on that, maybe we can make some real progress instead of each side being off in their corner, one side saying ban guns, get rid of guns, and the other side saying don't you touch anything about guns. >> schieffer: what should the president do? >> well, the

-abiding citizen, if you pass a background check, if you take a safety course, and in fairness to the nra, they're big on that. if you take a safety course, if you meet all those requirements, you ought to have a gun in your home for protection. perhaps under certain circumstances, you ought to be able to carry a gun, all those things are fine, but there's a whole range of stuff that falls outside that definition that puts us in far more peril than it is likely to protect our safety. consider the circumstance of aurora. since nobody knew for sure that a guy dressed like the joker was going to come in and start spraying bullets everywhere, in order for those in the theater to be armed and ready to respond, if follows they have to be armed at all times. that means you have a bunch of people walking around in the supermarket, at the starbucks, walking their dog, taking their kid to the park, all armed. over the course of a year, how off do you think that would lead to tragedy and how often do you think it would lead to safety? that's my question. >> pure accident, the three stories i read. preside
